I lie in my bed, staring at my phone—more specifically, at my text thread with Lily. She’s so mad, and I can’t blame her. I can’t believe she didn’t come home for Thanksgiving. Not only did I fuck up her life as far as we’re concerned, but now, I also fucked up her life with her family.
I don’t know why I thought this break would make things better for her, but I truly did. I knew that she would be upset at first, but I was hoping that she would be back to her normal self soon. She knows it’s not forever.
I have had my dad in my ear, calling her a distraction, since my freshman year of college when I refused to break up with her as he’d thought I should. He has always been so afraid that my relationship with her would hold me back, not allowing me to reach my potential, my dreams—or more accurately, his dreams.
It has been my father’s goal that at least one of his sons would play for the University of Michigan and go on to play for the NFL. Landon was a decent football player in high school, but he wasn’t made for the sport like I am. I have been playing football since I could walk, and I have loved every minute of it…until college. Something switched in college, and the sport became a chore when the option of not being the absolute best was taken away.
Winning isn’t sufficient anymore. My father finds fault in my game, even when we win. Nothing is ever good enough. My father knows my coaches and even some of my professors personally. He is an alumnus of U of M and a generous donor to the university. He’s orchestrated it so that he has eyes and ears on me at all times. I’m so tired of his visits and phone calls to check up on me and let me know that some staff member told him I wasn’t at my best or that I was distracted.
He has sucked the joy out of my life, and I’m counting down the days until graduation. In less than two years, I will be finished living the life he wishes he had lived, and I will be living the life I want.
I don’t know why I even care about what he thinks. More than anything, I wish that I didn’t. I wish I had the balls to tell them all to fuck off before walking off of the field and out of my classes, raising my two middle fingers in the air as I go.
But the thing is, I do care. I want to do my best and see this through. It is not in my nature to quit. My father doesn’t know this yet, but after I graduate, I’m done with the game. I plan to use the prestigious business degree I will have earned to get a good job that will set Lily and me up for our happily ever after.
